Dr. Scharff published Paper About Cornea Disease

The Review of Optometry today published a paper by Dr. Scharff reporting on a genetic cluster of Granular Dystrophy, an inherited disease of the cornea.

Dr. Koch Honored By Veterinary Ophthalmologists

The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists honored Dr. Koch by naming him its 2008 Memorial Lecturer. His talk on surgical complications, applicable to the human and the canine eye, was titled “What To Do When You Don’t Get What You Want.” The mission of ACVO is to advance the quality of veterinary medicine through certification of veterinarians who demonstrate excellence as specialists in veterinary ophthalmology.

6th Annual Koch Eye Cares Day

Our 6th Annual Koch Cares Day was held in honor of the late Peter Koch, MD. On this day each year all the offices of Koch Eye Associates are closed and every employee volunteers at a Rhode Island charity for the day. This year our staff volunteered at 24 different charities.

Primary Care optometric News, a trade publication, today published an article by Dr. Scharff about Pellucid Marginal Degeneration, a condition that weakens the cornea.

Dr. Koch named Chairman of Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Koch was selected Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Anew Intraocular Lens, Inc. The company was established to develop a new generation of accommodating and microincision intraocular lenses using ultra-thin technology to minimize lens thickness and mass. The thin technology will also produce a lens of improved quality with fewer visual aberrations.

Dr. Koch Invited Speaker at American Cataract Society Meeting

Dr. Koch was an invited speaker at the Spring Cataract Symposium sponsored by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery held in South Carolina. His topics were Managing Complications of Cataract Surgery and The Use of Accommodating and Multifocal Intraocular Lenses. The mission of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is to advance the art and science of ophthalmic surgery and the knowledge and skills of ophthalmic surgeons. It does so by providing clinical and practice management education and by working with patients, government, and the medical community to promote the delivery of quality eye care.

Dr. Koch Invited Speaker at New England Society

Dr. Koch was an invited speaker at the 716th meeting of the New England Ophthalmological Society. He lectured on balancing fluid dynamics in the eye during cataract surgery to make the operation simpler and safer. NEOS was founded in 1884 for the study and advancement of ophthalmology and to provide for the mutual education of members, today totaling some 700 ophthalmologists from throughout New England. NEOS is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific medical research purposes in connection with treatment and diseases of the eyes.

Dr. Koch Receives Lifetime Merit Award

Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today has awarded Dr. Koch its Annual Nordan Award for a lifetime of contributions in the fields of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The award is named for Lee Todd Nordan, MD, a pioneering surgeon who developed much of the framework for modern corneal refractive surgery.

Changing 100 Eyes in 100 Minutes

Koch Eye Associate was one of 100 sites across the country where 100 cataract operations were performed within 100 minutes, all for free for indigent patients. Each patient received the Crystalens, a premium accommodating intraocular lens implant provided at no cost by Bausch & Lomb.

For the 15th consecutive year Koch Eye Associates was the underwriter for the fundraising auction for Rhode Island Public Broadcasting. 22 of our staff volunteered to answer the phones, work behind the scenes. Peter, Dr. Patty and Dr. Paul were the celebrity auctioneers on Table A.

Peter Koch Wins Local Dancing With The Stars – Again!

Peter Koch and with partner Tanya Silvio won the Judge’s Choice category at the Second Annual Rhode Island Mentoring Dancing With The Stars competition. Their winning dance was a waltz morphing into a frenetic Disco number.

Dr. Koch Receives Patent On New Accommodating Intraocular Lens

Today Dr. Koch was granted US Patent 7,354,451. His invention is a new Accommodating Intraocular Lens Implant that he believes will help millions be able to see far and near without bifocals. His patents also include a device that softens a cataract to make its removal easier.

Dr. Koch Named to Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Koch was named to the Scientific Advisory Board of Ace Vision, Inc. Ace Vision is ophthalmic medical device company that was established in 2006 to develop and market proprietary technology to restore dynamic accommodation in an aging eye for patients seeking to reduce or eliminate their dependency on reading glasses.

Peter Koch was featured on our local Celebrity Squares, and assigned the pretigious center square. The fundraiser was hosted by the Rhode Island Volunteering Association and was held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

Dr. Moltolko Promoted To Full Professor

Dr. Michael Moltolko was promoted today to Full Professor of Ophthalmology, Ivey Eye Institute, University of Western Ontario. Dr. Moltolko is the senior Glaucoma Consultant at the University and at Koch Eye Associates.

Dr. Koch Featured Speaker in Connecticut

Dr. Koch was the featured speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Ophthalmology Society. He gave two lectures to the physicians themed around ways to make cataract surgery simpler and safer. He also spoke with the technicians, showing them how complications can occur in eye surgery and their effects on visual outcomes.

Dr. Koch appeared with Don Brunelle show on WOON. They discussed new multifocal intraocular lens implants, and new discoveries in treating glaucoma. Dr. Koch also took questions from listeners who called in.

Dr. Scharff Publishes Article About Cornea

Contact Lens Spectrum, a professional journal, today published an article by Dr. Scharff on the subject of “Lens-Assisted Pharmacological Kerato-Steepening,” a method of adjusting the curvature of the cornea to improve vision.

Dr. Koch is named Medical Editor Emeritus

After five years as Chief Medical Editor at Ophthalmology Management magazine, Dr. Koch handed over those responsibilities and his “Viewpoint” column to Larry Patterson, MD of Crossville, Tennessee. Dr. Koch assumed the position of Medical Editor Emeritus. He remains on the Editorial Board and has a new column “As I See It.”

Dr. Koch and Dr. Motolko achieve Canaloplasty certification.

Canaloplasty is the first glaucoma operation that uses a tiny microcannula to restore the eye’s normal physiology. Performed only by Interventional Ophthalmologists, Canaloplasty helps the entire drainage system of the eye without the need for any filtration openings or tissue elevations. He and Dr. Motolko each completed the necessary certification practicum to permit their performing the procedure. On a related note, Dr. Koch was one of four scientists who spearheaded the invention of the microcannula that is used in Canaloplasty.
