What is Blepharoplasty?
When you have an excess of skin on top or around the eyes that can sometimes obstruct your vision, this is called dermatochalasis. Thankfully, that can be fixed. Our team at Koch Eye Associates offers blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, to remove excess skin and lift the upper or lower eyelid. Believe it or not, it is a very common procedure at Koch Eye Associates. Many men and women undergo blepharoplasty to eliminate this condition, as well as ptosis (saggy eyelids), creating a more natural appearance to their face. We perform both lower or upper eyelid surgeries, and improvements are noticeable soon thereafter. If you want to learn more about blepharoplasty, schedule a consultation at Koch Eye Associates located in the Greater Rhode Island area.

Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are clients impaired by excess, hanging skin and folds that exist on the top of the eyelid, or puffy skin just under the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause vision impairment that can hinder everyday activity. If you have excess, hanging skin on the upper eyelid, or bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty can correct this to provide you with a softer, more natural appearance. During the initial consult, our team will discuss treatments based on your specific conditions and needs.
Surgical Technique
Depending on the nature of the blepharoplasty, general anesthesia or a type IV sedation will be provided. Eyelid surgery may be done on the upper eyelid alone, on the bottom eyelid, or both eyelids if necessary. This is an outpatient procedure.
- Upper eyelid surgery assists in reducing the loose skin that droops down, usually impairing vision. An incision is usually made along the lid crease to remove tissue and fat. Our clients often see immediate improvements to their vision and overall appearance.
- Lower eyelid surgery is performed to improve puffy and bulging skin under the lower eyelid. In most cases, an incision is placed below the lash line to surgically remove fat and the skin is gently lifted to produce a softer look. Sometimes, a nonsurgical laser procedure may be implemented to help with discoloration while dermal fillers may be used for more volume and smoothness if necessary.
What to Expect
The procedure can take up to two hours, depending on whether one or both eyes are treated. After the surgery, you will be able to go home and rest. You should plan on taking a few days to recover and avoid any strenuous activities. Use cold compresses when needed. This will assist in reducing any pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising that may occur. The results from eyelid surgery can last a decade or even longer. Although the aging process does not stop, you may want to come in for facial rejuvenation treatments at Koch Eye Associates to maintain your youthful-looking appearance.
